Rick Nelson

Rick Nelson was familiar to a generation of early baby boomers as a child star of television on the "Ozzie and
Harriet Show" in the 1950's. From 1956-62, Ricky was a young singing idol, scoring several
hits such as "Young World" and "Travelin' Man." Dave Burgess of The Champs wrote a number of songs
that Rick recorded in the early 60's, and it was this association that probably led to Rick recording two
songs written by Seals and Crofts, as well. First was "Only the Young," written as an instrumental for The
Champs and released by them as a single. Words were added to the strong melody and the song was
reinvented for release on Nelson's 1965 album, "Best Always." Also on the album was "When the Chips
Are Down," written by Jimmy Seals, Keith MacKendrick and Dash Crofts.

01. ONLY THE YOUNG
(music by James Seals, 1964; lyrics by Charles Eugene, 1965 -- although album liner notes credit the song to
"Jimmy Seals - Pat Boone"). Released by Rick Nelson on the 1965 album, Best Always.

Heartaches, bitter tears that blind you when they fall.
Heartaches, no one there to hear you when you call.
And only the young, the young in love can really know.

Bad news, broken heart each time you see her face.
Bad news, tender lips that no one can replace.
And only the young, the young in love can really know.

Love that comes for the first time is sweet as rain (sweet as rain).
Love that hurts the fist time will rack with pain (rack with pain).
And only the young, the young in love can really know.

Whoa, whoa some day, I'll get used to knowin' we're apart.
Hmm, some day, I can cure this ache within this heart.
And only the young, the young in love can really know.
And only the young, the young in love can really know.
And only the young, the young in love can really know.

02. WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN
(lyrics and music by James Seals, Keith MacKendrick and Dash Crofts, 1965)
Released by Rick Nelson on the 1965 album, Best Always.

Whatcha gonna do when the chips are down?
Where you gonna go when your dreams come tumblin' down?
I'd like to know. I still love you so.
Will you come runnin' to me when the chips are down?

Hey hey hey, whatcha gonna do?
Hey hey hey, I'm still here waitin' for you.
I'd like to know. I still love you so.
Will you come runnin' to me when the chips are down?

Hey hey hey, whatcha gonna do?
Hey hey hey, I'm still here waitin' for you.
I'd like to know. I still love you so.
Will you come runnin' to me when the chips are down?
When the chips are down? When the chips are down?
