The Trophies

The Trophies were a studio attempt by Seals, Crofts and Dave Burgess in the mid 60's. When "The Champs" were waning as an instrumental ensemble, "The Trophies" were a vocal experiment that tested the early talents of these musicians. Three known 45's were released through Challenge records, but never charted:

Desire/Doggone It (9133)
I Laughed So Hard I Cried/Peg O' My Heart (9149)
Felicia/That's All I Want From You (9170)

To date, I have only located the second single. Seals & Crofts appear limited to background vocals. As the senior songwriter and singer for Challenge, Dave Burgess carries the lead on "I Laughed So Hard I Cried," and offers a vigorous, be-bop twist on the standard, "Peg O' My Heart."

I LAUGHED SO HARD I CRIED
(lyrics and music by Dave Burgess, date unknown)

When you found someone new, I told myself forget about you.
And you sure know how hard I tried.
I should've laughed the tears away and it might have worked ok,
But I laughed so hard I cried, I laughed so hard I cried.
And I know I should have been stronger.
My heart was breaking inside.
And I couldn't hold the tears any longer.

I must have looked like a clown the way my teardrops let me down.
All the smiles in the world couldn't help me keep my pride.
Guess you had the laugh on me and I must've been a sight to see.
I laughed so hard I cried, I laughed so hard I cried.
And I know I should have been stronger.
My heart was breaking inside.
And I couldn't hold the tears any longer.
No I couldn't hold the tears any longer.
Should have seen me when I cried.
How I cried, I cried, yes I cried.
